Sell Us Your Dog!

American K9s is seeking highly motivated labradorss to add to our detection training program. Dogs previously trained by our program are working across the USA in the government, state and local law enforcement, and the private sector including at Disney, NFL, MLB and cruise ships.

We look for dogs that are ‘too much’ for the average home. We want the dog that could play fetch for hours on end with no stop, or the hunting dog that has trouble staying calm in the blind. We need dogs who would do literally anything to get their toy.

Dogs that are a good fit will be:

-Highly toy-motivated (think absolutely toy obsessed!)

-Between 8 weeks and 2 years old

-Preferably come from known lines, and preferably health tested parents

-Not spayed or neutered (heavily preferred)

-Be confident in all public settings (age-appropriate)

Video

Video will be uploaded soon

Testing Instructions:

What you will need:

-A long line (we recommend 10’)

-A variety of toys

-A second person to video for you (optional, but helpful)

-A NEW to the dog public setting like Lowes, Home Depot, Tractor Supply, a school or airport

Videos to Take:

  1. Fetch in an aisle. Show the dog retrieving a toy (or a few different toys) in an aisle.
  2. Show how the dog does when the toy is tossed in the dog food aisle. Ideally, the dog will still go after the toy even when dog food is present.
  3. Place or throw the toy into a hard-to-reach location while the dog is watching you. We want to see how long the dog will persist to get a hard-to-reach toy.
  4. If you have a helper, have them hold the dog while you go around the corner and hide the toy. Return back to the dog and let them search for the toy. Do NOT point out the toy to the dog! We want to see how they will use their noses. You can use your body to help keep the dog on task and in the correct general area.
  5. Show the dog climbing in, on and through things. For younger dogs, using food is OK in these scenarios, although luring is not preferred. For older dogs, try to get them to chase a toy over these obstacles.
  6. Video the dog going through an automatic sliding doorway
  7. OPTIONAL but encouraged: Take the dog to the bathroom and show reaction to the toilet flushing and the hand dryer. Show the dog on an unstable surface.
